: How did the the warring states of China come
about such as during the Eastern Zhou empire,
were their rulers native clansman of that region
or did they descend from blood relations with the
dominant Zhou rulers? Specifically, I am doing
research on the state of Qin long before its
unifying of China and would like to know about
its beginnings.

You are correct in saying that the rulers of the
kingdoms during Dong Zhou or Eastern Zhou were
dukes of the land they rewarded by the Emperor
of the Zhou Dynasty or relatives of the royal
family (even royal families of the previous
dynasties were rewarded sometimes).

For the origin of the Qin Kingdom, please refer
to the origin of the Qin surname.
