    Origin and Evolution of Chinese Maxims

    China is a country that experienced the most wars, and can be considered as a country of military maxims. According to statistics, China went through 3791 wars during the last 5000 years, which amounted to about of the total wars in the entire world. (According to the scholars of Sweden, India, and Japan, there were about a total of 14500 wars throughout the history of mankind.) . Through practices, military maxims were developed in China throughout history for thousands of years. About 3380 books on military maxims were written in China, with 2308 of them still available nowadays. Out of these 2308 books, there were 18567 chapters on strategy.

    According to legend, the war between Huang Di and Chi You was an example of great strategy. The military maxims of Huang Di was recorded in the Sixteen Chapters of Huang Di. Unfortunately, this book was lost in history. Around 2100 B.C., China began to evolve into a feudal country of social classes. With the increase of the scale and the complexity of wars, China built up an army. During the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, Chinas military maxims were greatly developed. Yin Yi and Jiang Shang were example of top military generals of the time.
