God's Will and the Will of God

People often say, God willing, if God be willing, may God be willing, if God wills or if God will it. They want to be in God's will or with God's will. However, do we really know what is God's will or what is the will of God? It is of vital importance for Christians to know God's will, for knowing the will of God will ensure us that we are doing the right thing.

Let's look at the Bible (or Scripture) to see if we can identify the will of God or God's will.

    1) 2 Peter 3:9 teaches us that it is God's will that no one should perish and that all should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9- The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Thus it is the will of God that we evangelize so that more people should come to faith.

    2) After we've come to faith, it is God's will for us to be filled by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:17-18).

Ephesians 5:17-18- Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Thus it is will of God for us to yield to the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) and not to quench the spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19), so that we can be filled by the spirit.

    3) With the help of the Holy Spirit, we will have the power to submit and to love one another 1 Peter 2:13-18. For it is God's will for us to do so.

1 Peter 2:13-18- Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

Thus it is the will of God for us to submit to authority and each another in everything that we do.

    4) With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can do God's will of being pure (1 Thessalonians 4:3).

1 Thessalonians 4:3- It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality

Thus the will of God wants us to be sanctified and stay pure from sexual immorality.

    5) It is also God's will for us to have the mentality of endure suffering 1 Peter 4:1-2.

1 Peter 4:1-2- Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same attitude (for whoever suffers in the flesh has broken with sin), so as not to spend what remains of one's life in the flesh on human desires, but on the will of God.

Thus it is the will of God for us to endure suffering for those who suffer for the name of Christ are blessed (Matthew 5:11-12).

Conclusion: It is God's will for Christians to evangelize so that more people will be saved. Saved Christians shall be filled by the Holy Spirit by being sanctified continually, and submit to authority and each another. Last but not least, it's the will of God for Christians not to conform to this world, so that they may suffer for Christ's name and be blessed.
