Why Bible is the Word of God and the Final Authority

Why Bible is the Word of God and the Final Authority

    1. Nondestructive Nature- Throughout history, many people including powerful kings have tried to destroy the Bible. For example, the Roman Empire tried to destroy the Bible from 299 to 311 AD, Roman Catholic from 1150 to 1844 AD, and Hitler in the 1930's. Due to God's protection, the Bible have survived miraculously

    2. Coherent Unification- The Bible was written through more than 40 authors in 66 books which spanned a few thousand years, with a unify theme of salvation and the Savior, Jesus Christ. This was done through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The theme of the Bible can be summarized in John 3:16

    3. Life Changing Power- The Bible has the power to change many lives.

    4. Prophecy- All prophecies to date have been fulfilled
      • The rise and fall of Babylon, Medo-Persian, Greece and Roman Empire as predicted in Daniel 7
      • Prediction on the fate of the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis Chapter 49)
      • Prediction on the Nation of Israel (Leviticus 26:33-38, Deuteronomy 28:64-67) of being scattered, living in fear and persecuted.
      • Christ's prophecies on His first coming (Daniel 9:25); suffering and crucifixion (Isaiah 52 & 53, Psalms 22, etc).
      • Christ's prophecies on His second coming (Daniel 9:26, 27; Revelation), has yet to be fulfilled.
    5. Historical Confirmation- Archaeology to date has confirmed the accuracy of the Bible.
      • Village of the Hittites (1750 to 1200 BC, Genesis 15:20; 1 King 10:29) unearthed in 1876, which historians had refuted its existence before then.
      • Cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 14:3, Chapter 19) unearthed in 1924 showing that the inhabitants were wiped out by "heat event", agreeing with the account of the Bible (Genesis 19:24, brimstone)
      • City of Jericho (Joshua 6:20) unearthed in 1907, matching the description of its destruction in the Bible (Joshua 6:20, walls falling outward)
      • The Palace of David (1 Samuel 16 to 2 Samuel) unearthed in 1933. Historians had refuted the existence of King David for centuries.
      • City of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1) unearthed in May 2012, which historians have refuted for centuries.
    6. Inerrancy of the Bible-
      • The scribal error in the Bible is only less than 1%.
      • The Biblical contents have not been found to contain error by scientific findings. For example, the Koran says that the whole earth is on the back of a giant elephant. On the contrary,
        • Bible teaches that the earth is round and suspended in mid-air (Job 25:7; Isaiah 40:22). Both Job and Isaiah were written more than 2500 years ago. The earth was found by Columbus to be round only ~520 years ago.
        • Bible also teaches that the number of stars in the universe is as numerous as the sand on earth (Genesis 22:17). Scientists only confirmed that recently, with the most powerful telescopes.
      • There may be apparent inconsistency in the Bible, but after careful review, there is no error. Most of so-called errors fall in one of the follow four categories:
        • Different Aspects of the same event- Matthew 27:5 says (Judas) threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. Acts 1:18 says (Judas) fell headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. Normally, a person falling will not have his bowels gushing out. However if Judas indeed hanged himself, his body will only fall after the body and / or the hanging rope started to decay. This way, it made perfect sense that the bowels would gush out of a decayed body.
        • Different Views on the same issue- Matthew 27:28 says the soldiers stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. John 19:2 says the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. So was the robe scarlet or purple? I am a little color blind myself. What most people think is green, it generally looks grey to me. It is not surprising that Matthew thought the robe looked scarlet and John thought it looked purple. The robe was most likely purple red in color.
        • Different Culture- Matthew 1:16 says And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ. Luke 3:23 says Jesus was son of Joseph, son of Heli. So, was Joseph's father Jacob or Heli? Jacob was Joseph's father and Heli was Joseph's father-in-law. Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, thus the genealogy in Luke traced His ancestry through Mary. However, according to Hebrew culture, the genealogy of a child is always traced through the male line. Thus Matthew used Jacob as Joseph's father.
        • Figure of speeches- Revelation 7:1 says After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. Since the earth is round, some consider this an error. As we pointed out earlier, the Bible talks about the earth being round thousands of year before Columbus. Revelation 7:1 is only a figure of speech.
