Dunhuang Ruins

    Today, the Dunhuang city is nothing but ruins in the western desert. But its historical value and its colorful paintings have sparked interest in this historical site. Attractions include Mogaoku, Yulinku, Xiqian Buddha cave, and Xiaoqian Buddha cave, etc.

    Mogaoku, the center of the "Dunhuang" culture was built sometime during the Qin Dynasty, and was substantially expanded during the Sui Dynasty. There are almost 500 caves with about 45,000 square meters of colorful paintings and 2400 statues. During the ] Qing Dynasty (1900 A.D.) the Cangjing Cave was unearthed, with the discovery of large amount of treasures. Unfortunately, most of the treasures were robbed.
